In recent months, we have had so many questions about IASTM treatment.  We’ve gotten questions like, “What is IASTM anyway?” “How can IASTM help me?” and “What does IASTM stand for?”

So, first of all, IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.  Say that three times fast!  Unlike it’s long, mouthful name, this technique is actually relatively simple and is based on the same tissue principles as active release and other manual techniques.
The difference between this particular technique and other tissue mobilization techniques is that instead of the therapist using their hands, they use an instrument to work out unhealthy tissue or scar tissue that is causing problems.  And no, this is not a clarinet or a trombone that they are using!
Instruments to help with soft tissue work come in many different shapes and sizes and some examples can be seen below:

IASTM instruments are made of of many different types of materials, and they often look like medieval torture devices.  However, despite their menacing look, they can actually be used for good!
The tools can be used to break up scar tissue, restore normal gliding and sliding dynamics between the muscle and fascial layers, and improve mobility and reduce pain.   As with many of the other techniques we use at Par4Success, it is not a stand alone intervention usually, but it is a very valuable tool to have in our toolboxes.

Give us a call at 919-377-2084 and we will be happy to chat with you about your specific situation.  We can talk about how we might be able to help and what techniques might result in the best outcomes for you to get back to doing what you’re doing.
